BMI Categories for Indians
The standard WHO BMI chart differs slightly from the guidelines recommended for the Indian population. Indians are generally genetically prone to higher abdominal fat and lower muscle mass, putting them at higher risk of lifestyle diseases at lower BMI levels.
Underweight: Below 18.5
Normal: 18.5 - 22.9
Overweight: 23.0 - 24.9
Obese: 25.0 and above
Is BMI Enough?
While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has limitations. It does not distinguish between fat and muscle mass. Therefore, athletes with high muscle mass might be classified as overweight. It's always best to consult a healthcare provider and measure body fat percentage for a comprehensive health assessment.
