The Complete Guide to PPF and Its Benefits

Despite the rise of mutual funds and direct equity investing, the Public Provident Fund (PPF) remains a cornerstone of the average Indian's retirement portfolio. But what makes it so special?

What is PPF?

Introduced in 1968, the PPF is a savings-cum-tax-saving instrument backed by the Government of India. The primary objective is to mobilize small savings by offering an investment with reasonable returns combined with income tax benefits.

The EEE Status

The biggest advantage of PPF is its "Exempt-Exempt-Exempt" (EEE) tax status. Very few financial instruments in India enjoy this:

  • Exempt 1 (Investment): The amount you invest (up to ₹1.5 Lakhs per year) is deductible from your taxable income under Section 80C.
  • Exempt 2 (Interest): The interest earned every year is completely tax-free.
  • Exempt 3 (Maturity): The entire maturity amount, when withdrawn after 15 years, is tax-free.

Key Rules to Remember

  • Lock-in Period: The standard maturity is 15 years, but it can be extended indefinitely in blocks of 5 years.
  • Investment Limits: You must invest a minimum of ₹500 and a maximum of ₹1,50,000 in a financial year.
  • Safety: Since it is backed by the sovereign guarantee of the Indian Government, it is essentially risk-free.
  • Compounding: Interest is calculated monthly but compounded annually. It's best to deposit your money before the 5th of the month to maximize interest.

Calculate Your Returns

Because of the power of compounding, investing ₹1.5 Lakhs every year for 15 years at the current interest rate yields a massive tax-free corpus. You can calculate exactly how much wealth you can build by using our PPF Calculator.

Conclusion

Even if you have an aggressive risk appetite and invest heavily in equities, having a debt allocation in the form of PPF provides stability to your portfolio, acting as a financial cushion during market downturns.
